SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT
“Adolescents entering the adult work world in the 21st century will need to read and write more than at any other time in human history.”
(Commission on Adolescent Literacy
of the International Reading Association.)
At Thornton, it is our goal to prepare our students for the future. We believe that literacy is essential to their success.
We know that students who don’t read during the summer lose some of the growth they have made during the year. Researchers tell us that even 10 or 15 minutes daily can maintain the skills students have developed, while reading more than that can help to continue growth in reading. Even with summer jobs and family activities, it is easy to squeeze in 10 or 15 minutes a day.
Students need to find something that is interesting for them --- including comic books, newspapers, magazines, novels, and informational books. You can support your son or daughter by reinforcing the expectation of summer reading and encouraging them to start thinking about what kinds of things they might read this summer. This is crucial to their ongoing literacy development. Don’t miss this opportunity to provide any needed support to keep your child growing in this critical area.
In the June newsletter specific requirements will be discussed.
