When students enroll in the Newcomer Center at Thornton High School, each student will earn graduation credits while taking classes designed for Newcomers to the United States, develop English skills in a welcoming environment that honors home language and culture, have the support of staff specifically trained in culturally responsive teaching strategies, and the opportunity to interact with other newcomers and take advantage of the benefits of traditional US high school experience.
Open to students in grades 9-12. Students will be enrolled in the program for one school calendar year. After completion of the program, students do have the opportunity to transfer back to their home school. Athletic eligibility may be impacted by such transfers.
Students and their siblings will also have access to the in-building medical clinic.
How to enroll:
Students that have been enrolled in the United States for two years or less are eligible to enroll at the Newcomer Center. Adams 12 Five Star Schools has dedicated staff members to work with families to complete the enrollment process and paperwork. Your family will work with the newcomer youth and family advocate, the family liaison at your home school, or other family and student outreach staff to enroll your child at the Newcomer Center at Thornton High School.
Newcomer Center academics:

Students enrolled at the Newcomer Center will take five core classes: English Language Development (ELD), English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, Social Studies

Students will also have an advisory class in the Newcomer Center

Students have the opportunity to take two elective classes taught by Thornton High School staff
Athletic and activities:
Newcomer Center students can participate in all Thornton High School athletics and activities. Learn more.
Bell schedule:
The Newcomer Center will follow the same hour and bell schedule as Thornton High School.
Transportation:
Adams 12 Five Star Schools will provide bus transportation for students enrolled in the Newcomer Center at Thornton High School for students that live within district boundaries.
